The Pathways Department: Guiding Students Towards Bright Futures

Through these meetings, students can discuss their goals and receive tailored guidance to make informed decisions about their post-16 options.

2

Tracking Progress and Interests:

The department maintains detailed records of each student's academic progress, extracurricular activities, and interests. By closely monitoring students' achievements and hobbies, they can identify potential career pathways that align with individual talents and passions.

3

Providing Post-16 Education Advice:

Armed with extensive knowledge about further education options, vocational courses, and apprenticeships, the Pathways Department offers comprehensive advice on various post-16 education pathways available in the UK. They provide insights into different academic courses, potential career trajectories, and the skills required to excel in specific fields.

Facilitating Workshops and Events:

The department organizes workshops, seminars, and events that bring in guest speakers, employers, and alumni to share their experiences and insights with students. These interactive sessions expose students to diverse perspectives and broaden their understanding of the professional world.

Pathways at Abbot's Hill:

In the UK, Careers Education plays a crucial role in helping students explore their interests, skills, and aspirations to make informed decisions about their future careers. Aimed at both parents and students, this explanation will highlight the Gatsby Benchmarks and how schools strive to offer personalised and unbiased advice to students. It will also outline how Careers Education is integrated into the Personal Development Education (PDE) programme and linked to various academic subjects through trips, talks, and other initiatives.

The Gatsby Benchmarks: Building a Strong Foundation

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a set of eight guidelines established to ensure that all young people in the UK have access to high-quality careers guidance. These benchmarks are used as a framework for schools and colleges to measure the effectiveness of their careers programs. They are as follows:

3. Addressing the Needs of Each Student:

Careers guidance should be personalized, considering individual abilities, interests, and aspirations.

6. Experiences of Workplaces:

Schools should provide opportunities for students to experience real workplaces, helping them gain insights into different industries.

1. A Stable Careers Program

Schools must have a well-planned and embedded careers program that covers all year groups and aligns with the needs of students.

4. Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers:

Schools should demonstrate how subjects relate to different career pathways, making learning more relevant and engaging.

7. Encounters with Further and Higher Education:

Students should have access to information about further and higher education options.

2. Learning from Career and Labour Market Information:

Students should have access to up-to-date information about career options and labour market trends to make informed decisions.

5. Encounters with Employers and Employees:

Students should have meaningful interactions with employers and employees to understand the world of work better.

8. Personal Guidance:

Every student should receive one-on-one guidance to help them make well-informed decisions about their future careers.

Integration with the Personal Development Education (PDE) Programme

Careers Education is  embedded into the school's Personal Development Education (PDE) programme, which encompasses activities and initiatives designed to enhance students' personal and academic development.

By integrating Careers Education into the PDE programme, Abbot's Hill aims to ensure that careers guidance is not just a one-off event but a continuous process that adapts to the evolving needs of each student.

Workshops and Talks

Schools organise workshops and talks where professionals from various industries share their experiences and knowledge with students. This allows students to learn about different career paths and the skills required in specific fields.

Workplace Visits

Organised workplace visits enable students to witness first-hand the daily operations of different industries, helping them make informed career choices.

Alumni Connections

Schools maintain connections with former students, inviting them to share their career journeys and how their education influenced their choices.

Pathways & Careers Fairs

Career fairs bring together employers, colleges, and training providers, offering students opportunities to explore different career options and gather information.

Trips Linked to Academic Subjects

Teachers may organize educational trips that are relevant to the subjects being studied. For instance, a biology class could visit a research laboratory, offering insights into potential scientific career paths.

Unifrog

Unifrog is the leading online platform for careers education in the UK and every Abbot's Hill senior pupil has an account that they can access from anywhere. Pupils are encouraged to explore the site themselves but it is also used in guided, stage-appropriate sessions during PDE.
